Business Essays: People Management - Information for many businesses means both increased profits and increased efficiency within the operations of a company. In this respect then it is reasonable to conclude that information and knowledge related to managing people and organisations would be one of the more critical aspects of this informational system. However while information and knowledge may be a good of and in itself it is the processes through which we apply this knowledge which often has a vital bearing on the effectiveness of such knowledge. This problem then may be seen as a fundamental one in the continue success of an organisation in terms of it goals and strategic objectives. Read more...
Health Essays: Mental Health - The idea that a diagnosis of mental illness can be more harmful than beneficial is a concept which many might find surprising. However if we examine the emergence of sociological theories originating from the symbolic interactionist movement of the 1960s we can construct an argument based on these theoretical insights as to how a diagnosis of being mentally ill might be harmful outside of the implications for possible treatment with which such a diagnosis would bring. In this manner we consider what the most effective strategy of treatment should be. Read more...
Health Essays: Health Psychology - Smoking is attributed as a cause of around 100,000 or close to 20% of all deaths in the UK with lung cancer as the biggest killer at 40,000 (Baggot, 2004:15). Morbidity from smoking is seen as causing over 250,000 hospital admissions each year due to other chronic diseases such as high blood pressure, respiratory infections and lung disease which are associated with the habit, (Department of Health, 2001). Similarly passive smoking is seen as a related factor in many diseases. Due to the low rates of survival from smoking related diseases prevention has been the object of health strategies related to smoking. Read more...
International Relations Essays: Diplomacy, Ethics & Their Role In International Relations - This paper is a research proposal into ethical diplomacy and the extent of its impact on international relations. While the intention is to explore this topic in general terms, it is nonetheless important to identify and analyse specific issues in order to arrive at some coherent conclusions. Indeed all three components in this research project (namely diplomacy, ethics and international relations) constitute disciplines in their own right and as such can be researched in isolation. Therefore to minimise the scope for overly-superficial analysis, it is important to outline and explore specific cases. Read more...

Law Essays: Defamation and Human Rights Act 1998 - The aim of this study is to consider, via an analytical approach, the effect on the law of defamation of the implementation of the European Convention on Human Rights and the Human Rights 1998 and whether or not the law of defamation strikes an appropriate balance between the need to protect reputation and the general right of freedom of speech. During the conduct of this study a number of points will be discussed. The points to be discussed are the law of defamation and where it is located, and its working. There will be an in-depth analysis of how the law addresses the difference between what is considered to be defamatory and the right to freedom of speech. Read more...
Law Essays: UK Bribery Law - Bribery is outlawed under s 1(1) of the Prevention of Corruption Act 1906. This Act defines [17] in which the type of body is irrelevant and there is express application to both agents and “persons” acting for and on behalf of a Principal [18] . This provision is extended in its application by two further acts. The first is a curious anomaly under the Prevention of Corruption Act 1916, which creates a presumption of bribery in cases involving public or government bodies. [19] The second is the more recent Anti-terrorism, crime and security (ATCS) Act 2001, which extends application to bribes committed by UK nationals in overseas territories. [20] The former will be discussed further under heading C2. Read more...
Law Essays: Labour Government & Trade Union Law - The Labour Government elected in 1997 had manifesto commitments to reform some aspects of trade union law and to reinstate, to a degree, those trade union rights which had been lost through the erosion of industrial democracy and the social partnership during the preceding 18-year Conservative administration, particularly following the Employment Acts of 1980 and 1982 and 1990. The Thatcher years had seen the removal from civil and statutory protection of the practice (sometimes described as a right) to secondary industrial action. In fact this “right” which is perhaps better described as a freedom, can still be “enjoyed”. Read more...
Law Essays: Equity and Trusts - The general duty of trustees is the maxim “delagatus non potest delegare” – the person to whom responsibility has been delegated may not delegate the responsibility to another. In other words, a trustee must provide personal service to the trust. However in Re Chetwynd’s Settlement. [1] Farewell J stated that “No trustee accepts the responsibility for the term of his natural life, or for more than a reasonable period.” It is important to note, however, that Horatio and Isabella cannot retire on a whim and in some circumstances retirement will not be a valid unless a new trustee is appointed in their place. There are various ways in which Horatio and Isabella could go about retiring from the trust and appointing Kerry and Luis in there place. Read more...
Management Essays: Operational Management - The machine manufacture industry, exposed to the ever strengthening forces of globalization and international markets, has become extremely competitive in recent decades. Complex economic factors and a sensitive chain of supply and demand makes success in this industry a matter of very fine margins: of a even and fast flow of materials leading to greater production and expanded performance frontiers. Innovation too, in all its myriad forms, is a prerequisite for survival in this industry. It has been expedient therefore for many manufacturers both in the United Kingdom and globally to de-integrate their companies and re-structure their business models to include greater levels of specialization. Marketing Essays: Media Fragmentation - Today's consumers are being blasted with more and more television channels, and a constant stream of new magazines that hit the news stands every week. Combine this media explosion with an increasing level of ad avoidance, and the future for some more "traditional" media might seem bleak. Over the last decade, life for marketers and media planners has been made difficult by the accelerating fragmentation of the media market Consumers have a greater choice of what to watch, listen to or read. Therefore advertising has to spread further, covering multitude of channels to gain the same exposure (Croft, M. 1999). Read more...
Media Essays: Critical Evaluation of Get Carter - In the post‑modern era of Pulp Fiction (1994) and other stylised gangster movies, Get Carter still retains a position of pre‑eminence in the film making communities (almost sacrilegious in some circles) in Britain and America to the extent that the film was re‑released in British cinemas in 1999. Its star, Michael Caine, likewise experienced something of a revival during the 1990’s, for example, his shoot for the cover of GQ magazine in September 1992, which made heavy reference to the watershed role he played in Get Carter. [2] The movie was re‑made with Sylvester Stallone in the lead role re‑locating the action to upstate New York in 2002. Read more...
Media Essays: Cultural Imperialism and Western Media - To best answer the question within the title we need first to define the concept of cultural imperialism so as to ascertain how it differs from traditional modes of imperialism; it is important to understand how cultural imperialism is a logical by product of the long and varied history of the west’s relationship with the rest of the world and how this, in turn, affects the global perception of western media within non‑western audiences. We then need to look at the most important concept in the study of cultural imperialism, the advent of globalisation as an economic and political reality. Read more...
Politics Essays: Electoral Reform UK - In 1976 Lord Hailsham described Britain as an elective dictatorship by which he meant that a party elected into government with a dominant majority can essentially rule Britain as if it were a dictatorship, albeit an elected one. The subject is a recurrent debate in British politics as the existing electoral system of first-past-the-past rewards the ability to achieve a majority in constituencies and is not a reflection of a party’s national representation. A system of proportional representation would represent national political will more fairly and in doing so reduce the possibility of one party dominating government. However, the direction of this question places undue emphasis on the problem of an elective dictatorship. Read more...
Psychology Essays: Prison Psychologist - The notion that the power afforded prison guards engenders abuse was one of the major conclusions of the Stanford project, however, as Joycelyn Pollock suggests, again the reality seems to be much more complex. Kercher and Martin (cited Pollock 1986: 4), for instance, found that the attitudes prison guards had towards their prisoners varied enormously from prison to prison and from guard to guard, being more a reflection of where individual guards were in their career cycle than any deeper psychological tendencies. This suggests again that psychological research carried out on small subject groups do not translate particularly well to the larger real institution. Read more...
Theatre Essays: Samuel Beckett - Postmodernism, as Fredric Jameson points out, can be best understood through its relationship and difference to Modernism[1], a philosophical and artistic concept that had it roots in the Enlightenment of the eighteenth century (Bradbury and McFarlane, 1991). In an artistic sense, the Modernist work was characterised by experiment and a rejection of the Romantic subjective self. Works such as T.S. Eliot’s The Waste Land (1989) and James Joyce’s Ulysses (1977) exemplify both the Modernist propensity for innovation and the removed authorial voice and we can certainly see this in many, if not all of Beckett’s theatrical works.
