2.3 Eye Laser Procedure
A person has to go through a few stages before he or she is ready to go for an eye corrective surgery. Eye laser procedures are group into three main stages which are before LASIK, during LASIK and after LASIK.
2.3.1 Before LASIK
They have to prepare well for pre-LASIK exam. The patients must ensure that they already take off any soft lens or toric lens for at least 3 to 7 days because this recommendable contacts lens would reshape your cornea to the correct vision so that you can see clearly. Therefore, the doctor must make sure that the cornea has returned to its natural shape before your LASIK procedure is started. This is the first procedure that the patients must do it.
During the pre-LASIK exam, there are total up eight tests to be carried out on the patients during the pre-LASIK exam to determine the suitability. First, it would be the automated refraction and keratometry. This is to determine your refractive error. Second, the slit lamp examination which is your cornea and external eye will be examined with a micro. Third, the pupil will be measured to determine the size in dim conditions. Fourth, the tonometry is to measure the intra-ocular eye pressures. Fifth, the contour of the cornea will be mapped which is called as topography. The following sixth, the corneal thickness will be measured, termed as pachymetry. Next, the manifest refraction that is your refractive error will be confirmed by our qualified optometrist. Lastly, the cycloplegic refraction is for dilation of the pupil. It is to aid the internal eye examination and measurement of refractive error which is caused by the mismatch of the power of the cornea and the lens with the length of the eyes. After these eye drops, it may appear blurred and could not drive. They also need a sunglass to reduce the glare.
Before going to the LASIK surgery, a light meal can be taken. They have to bath or wash their hair before the surgery if they want to avoid the water goes into their eyes after the surgery. Furthermore, they are strictly not allowed to use perfume, hairspray, cologne and other substances that contain alcohol after the surgery. They have to go with someone else so that can bring them home after the surgery.
2.3.2 During LASIK
The procedure will use roughly about 10 minutes on each eye. Some eye drops andanaestethic will be slowly instilled into the eye. It will deaden your eye. During the process is going you must keep your eye open. Thus, the lid speculum is used to prevent your eye from blinking. It is painless notwithstanding you will feel a strecthing perception. When come to the surgery, your eye is placed with a suction ring. At the same time, you will feel some pressure on your eye and the vision is going dark. Microkeratome is a specially designed instrument with the function of creating a flap on the cornea. As the microkeratome is in use, a buzzing sound is heard. The laser will be applied on the cornea after the doctor lift up the flap. Again, there will be a buzzing sound and a slightly smell of burning. This is a very common effect. Afterwards, the corneal surface is washed and the flap is restored without any stitches and the healing process is begins. There is slight grittiness, stinging and watering of the eyes in the few hours. Therefore, the patient needs to rest for 30 minutes and check again before being released to home.
2.3.3 After LASIK
Some of the activities are restricted to protect the eyes after the eye surgery. For example, the immediately procedures after the eye surgery are the day which the patient going for operation should be a day of resting. Avoid rubbing, squeezing, pressing and massaging the eyes are a must. They would not be allowed to do computer works, reading and watch TV. They should also avoid the soap and water run into the eyes. The last thing is the patient could not stare for some time without lubricating the eyes. Otherwise, it will cause adverse effects on the eyes.
Within the 24 hours, restriction of movement to minimal activities is the best way to protect their eyes also. Flying in air planes is acceptable but they have to keep their eyes generously lubricated in every 30 minutes interval. They could not have eye makeup or any eye cream as the wound has not recovered yet. Avoiding soap and water in the eyes is continued. The patients also should not go to dusty, smoky and dirty environment as this may expose them to the infective agents. Eye shield can be used during sleeping or napping.
Between 7 to14 days, the medium activities are allowed with extra caution but swimming, eye makeup and touching the eyes still should be avoid. Shallow swimming may resume after 14 days. They have to wear sunglasses all the time at outside under the sun.
In one month, they have started to back to their normal life with the activities like scuba diving, snorkeling, biking, skiing, golfing, basketball, baseball, football, soccer and others.
Between the following 3 months, they can proceed to water skiing, kayaking, surfing and others with extra caution also because these activities have a high risk of water being forced into the eyes.
