LIONS-LORD OF FORESTS

Lions are unique social cats those live in groups called prides.Prides have members from 3-30 individuals,but average 4-6.A pride is controlled by 1 or 2 lions having lionesses over whom they have breeding rights.Lionesses stay in the pride they are born in making the group a collection of sisters, aunts, mothers and grandmothers who have grown up together. Males are expelled from the pride on the maturity. and form coalitions with other males with whom they hunt.Most of the hunting is done by lionesses in a systematic way. The lions' territory is from north Africa,and India.The male lion is the only cat to have a mane, giving it a majestic look.The mane is a sign of maturity as well it protects the lion during regular fights with other lions.Males lions are bigger in size than females.develop thick The mane protects the lion during fights with other males.Lions are true carnivores eating antelope, buffalo, zebra, giraffe, deer and livestocks but they also scavenge for food. ASIATIC LIONS-

Gir national park,covering a total area of 1882.6 sq. km, forms Gir forest,Gujrat is the home to Asiatic lions which are now confined to this part of ndia.Once the lions were distributed in Asia Minor and Arabia through Persia to India.There number in the park area are about 350.Asiatic lions are smaller in size as compared to African lions.Also Asiatic lion prides are smaller than those of African lions, with an average of only two females, whereas an African pride has an average of four to six.The prey base of the lions includes sambar, chital, nilgai, chinkara, wild boar and livestock.The hunting of livestock by lions lead generally to their killing by local people.The national park flora is made up of dry scrubland with hills, rivers, and teak forest.

Gir has tropical monsoon climate, which is very hot during the summer.The Gir has about 38 species of mammals, around 300 species of birds, 37 species of reptiles.Besides lions,gir park supports the leopard, the jungle cat, the hyena, the jackal. The Asiatic lion is classed as Critically Endangered.

AFRICAN LIONS

African lions are bigger cats living in prides consisting of one or two males, up to seven females which are larger than the Asiatic lions.Adult males can weight up to 250 Kg and females about 150 Kg. Their lifespan is about 15 years.African lions are the only naturally-occuring lions as lions in India are confined to gir protected area Lions can be found in desert fringe, in woodland or open savannah,but do not live in heavy forests and jungles or desert areas due to a scarcity of game.Breeding occurs all year round, with 2 to 6 cubs. Lion's prey include mostly beasts, zebra, waterbuck, kudu, giraffe and buffalo.Lions are quite adaptable and Lions hunt by ambush.
