SARS at The End of Millennium

SARS at The End of Millennium

In the modern era of 21st Century, health becomes one of the most valuable point to concern in human life. There are various diseases, and more diseases are developing or even created harming almost every human in the world. A human who caught contact with a disease, will feel syndrome at first. The disease spread through the circulatory system, a system where blood circulates from the heart to the lungs, which connects back to the heart and then the blood circulates to the whole body and returns to the heart. The disease which is an antigen to the body creates a reaction from a human body to create antibodies that counter these harmful antigens. These antibodies produced may vary due to different type of the antigen. There are though some human that suffers from immunity disorder because the body wrongly consider a healthy tissue as a harmful tissue. Antibody is the part of the immune system, a system which protects the body from a harmful disease. SARS one of many new harmful disease that stands for Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome harms the respiratory system which means harming the lungs, trachea, diaphragm and other parts of the system that take parts in exchanging gasses with the blood. The cause of SARS have not been determined even until now, but some scientist from different parts of the world suggest different causes for SARS, like German scientist suggest if the disease was caused by a virus from a family called paramyxoviridae which is usually responsible for the cause of mumps and measles. While 1 week after the German scientist define what is the possible cause of SARS, American scientist define that SARS was caused by the Coronavidae family which were responsible for cold and intestinal aliments . A professor in the University of Colorado stated that it might be possible if SARS were transmissible from the animals to the humans. So far there are no treatments for this disease, but a person can prevent from getting this disease by washing their hands, using masks, hand gloves and eye protection, avoiding skin contacts with SARS patient and disinfect the furniture and items which SARS patients interacted. But even with the discovery of SARS, health at the end of millennium will stay the same like before.

Fortunately SARS have several limitations which are good for humans. It is hard for humans to get infected with SARS unless they get skin contact with a SARS infected patient so it is most likely to infect the patient family who went visiting the patient rather than a person who uses the same public transportation with the patient. SARS is also not that fatal as a disease, because based on a research it's fatality rate is low, only 2-3 percent. SARS is not transmissible by air, thus it is not possible if a person get infected by breathing in the same room with a SARS infected patient.

With the discovery of SARS, it has effectively effects various aspects in human life, mostly economically. Globally SARS were making people to panic and overreact, for example like there were children who were tourist arriving to Melbourne catching a flu symptoms were defined by local newspaper as a SARS infected people. Actually, the first SARS case which draws the news media attention was the death of Italian WHO official Dr.Carlo Urbani, the very first person who identifies SARS. Another case, which was the blending of 260 Hong Kong citizens who were suspected to caught SARS and live in 1 same apartment block, makes the news media to cause panic mostly on Hong Kong citizens because of the news were shocking. The Australian government reacts to SARS by not allowing their citizens to the affected areas, which include Guangdong, Hong Kong, Singapore, Vietnam and Toronto. This is not the only action that Australian government has take, but also isolating coming visitors who were suspected to be infected with SARS. These two action triggered by the Australian government have increased the panic of human life in the world. In Indonesia, there were only 2 suspects of SARS.

The economic world was shock by the discovery of SARS. Hong Kong and Singapore whose tourism is one of the biggest in Asia were hit as less people were eager to enter the restaurants, hotel, and airports, thus the company mostly decide to start reduce its employee. US computer producer Hewlett Packard closed down 300 offices in Hong Kong just because of a gossip which 1 of its employee caught SARS. A lot of events which were suppose to happen in Hong Kong, such as conferences and sport events were cancelled or postponed. As for the last hit, share markets of Singapore and Hong Kong fallen and the future economy of these two countries is uncertain.

The cause of SARS is uncertain. There are many scientist that suggest the cause different causes. German scientist suggests if the cause of SARS is virus from paramyxoviridae family, a family of virus which causes mumps and measles. American scientist suggests that the cause of SARS is a virus from Coronaviradae family, a family which causes cold and intestinal aliments. But scientist is surer if SARS is a coronavirus, since the one of property of corona virus is that it can do RNA recombination, which may support the finding of new host and infect the person. There are no vaccine available yet to counter SARS but in order to stop the spread of SARS, every person can wash their hands regularly using soap, use masks, hand gloves and eye protector to cover this area in order to avoid contact with the virus, and clean areas that were used by SARS patient by bleach or alcohol mixed with 99% water and then mob it to dry it. These methods can be used globally or locally because it just depends on the willingness of the people to apply the method.

So, at the end of millennium it is most likely that health will be the same as before because with the preventing method, less people will get infected with SARS. Until now, 1 question remained unresolved, "How to cure SARS?" that question can't be solved by the scientist. It is also weird that why SARS can spread to faraway country like Canada since SARS can't spread through air. These questions remain become a mystery in medical world.
