Smoking is one of the worst things people can do to their bodies. Yet every single day about 4,000 kids start smoking. Almost everyone knows that smoking causes cancer, emphysema, and heart disease; that it can shorten your life by 20 years; and that the habit can cost a smoker thousands of dollars a year. So how come people are still constantly smoking? The answer, in a word, is dependence. We are constantly around people that say that they "need" to smoke. Many teens these days are influenced not only by their friends, but local advertisements; this is harmful to the consumer's health but good for business.
People smoke for many different reasons: Stress, Depression, Peer-Pressure, to act "cool", and etc. But mainly people smoke to relieve themselves from the rest of the world. "Humans are the only species to have an urge, the urge to inhale harmful smoke into the body." (Merino np) For people that do smoke, smoking has become a necessity to them as food is to humans. Without smoking this urge will persist. "Smoking for us, then, became a substitute for our early habit of following the whims of the moment it becomes a legitimate excuse for interrupting work and snatching a moment for pleasure." (Dichter np) Since teens have grown out of the stage of being a kid they feel like they need another rush that they felt as a kid. As we grow older, we had to subordinate our pleasures to work and to the necessity for unceasing effort. "A cigarette is a reward that we can give ourselves as often as we wish" (Dichter np) Smoking to the people has become a reflex. Smokers believe that after they have worked hard, they should give themselves a personal prize for themselves. Not all people are for this matter, there are just as many people against this.
In a culture where it is not unordinary to see a child smoking a cigarette on the sidewalk at the park, where smoking advertisements are all over the place, and where large tobacco companies sponsor all the major events in sports, how can it be understood that what is going on is a form of suicide? "Smoking is equivalent to a serial killer,"
A cigarette is a weapon used by tobacco companies. The victims subjecting themselves by their own free will involve themselves in the crime. "Just think of all the potential any individual could possess inside them, waiting to emerge." Teenagers have as many possible choices in life to make and you have to control them. As children grow into teenagers, parents seem to forget the simple fact that they are still children and need to be guided. "Tobacco also kills by causing heart attacks, strokes, and other circulatory diseases." Smoking kills and ruins your life. Even one smoke is forever life changing; it will have a horrible imprint in your life/health. People have different views on this matter, but personally I must agree with being against this matter.
Smoking should not be enforced, encouraged, nor accepted into society. Smoking kill, you will not waster your money, and it shows you are smarter about the way you carry yourself. Smoking kills, period. For one, why would you purposely put yourself in a situation where you can choose to live a healthier life, but you choose the other path? Every cigarette you smoke is rapidly decreasing your lifespan. Another thing is that you will save money. Why would you also buy something that will basically give you a death wish? There are more things to buy in the world that are not going to destroy your health. Lastly, it will show that you are smarter. It shows that you were not fooled by the tobacco users. You actually know that smoking does not mean you are cool.
These reasons are the primary causes why smoking remains to be a popular social human activity. But its harmful effects are not advertised by the media, because it will effectively decrease cigarette sales if smoking is proven and commonly known that it is a harmful and dangerous activity. Smoking can affect the physical, psychological, and emotional health of an individual. The physical effects of smoking is already a public knowledge among smokers, but the psychological and emotional effects of smoking is still repudiated, but studies have been conducted that proves that smoking can cause depression to smokers. This issue illustrates how smoking not only affects the smoker, but other people, and the society as well. Smoking is more costly then most teens realize; to their health and to their wallets.
