Computer Aided Instruction, abbreviated CAI, is also known as Computer Assisted Instruction. It is aprogram of instructional material presented by means of a computer orcomputer systems for educational purposes. Moreover, these computer systems provide drill and practice exercises. CAIcan be used with little teacher intervention. The use of computers in education started in the 1960s. With the advent of convenient microcomputers in the 1970s,computer usein schools has become widespread fromprimary educationthroughthe universitylevel and even in some preschool programs. CAI software is one of the most common types of courseware (educational software) for three reasons: it's relatively easy to produce, it can be easily combined with more traditional educational techniques, and it produces clear, demonstrable results. CAI offers many advantages over workbooks and worksheets, which include: individualized learning, motivation, and confidence. Individualized learning indicates that the individual student can learn at his or her own pace. Motivation indicates that CAI can turn practice into a game. Students can practice skills that might otherwise be tedious to learn, such as arithmetic, spelling, and others. Finally, confidence signifies that CAI can help children become comfortable with computers as well as with the subject matter being taught. On the other hand, not all CAI software deserves praise. Much CAI software is flawed because it gives inappropriate feedback, enables students to practice mistakes, and discourages students from moving into new material. Even the best CAI can work only with tightly defined subjects in which every question can have a single, clear, unambiguous answer. CAI presents information in the form of facts, leaving no room for questioning, creativity, or cooperation.
Instructional computers are basically used in one of two ways: either they provide a straightforward presentation of data or they fill atutorial role in which the student is tested on comprehension. Many educational computer programs are available online and from computer stores and textbook companies. They enhance teacher instruction in several ways. If the answer is correct, the student is usually rewarded with a"Great Job!"or an animated response on the computer screen. If the answer is wrong, the computer demonstrates the correct way to solve the problem. Computer programs for writing help students with developing ideas, organizing, outlining, and brainstorming. Templates provide a framework and reduce the physical effort spent on writing so that students can pay attention to organization and content.
CAI affects one's social life in different aspects. For example, learners with low motivation or bad study habits may fall behind, or managing computer files and online learning software can sometimes seem complex for students with beginner-level computer skills. Moreover, students may feel isolated and unsupported while learning. Instructions are not always available to help the learner so learners need to have discipline to work independently without assistance, and also since all their work is done on computers.CAI may cause students to become bored with no interaction. This separates students from cooperating and socializing with their classmates and teachers. There is no social interaction and you do not have the pleasure that comes out of looking around in a real classroom and finding out how your fellow students are reacting to the course materials and introductory information. There is no one around in a virtual classroom to send you a glance of appreciation when you draft the right answers to a quiz or a live discussion session. Also, students may find excuses that they cannot finish their coursework. For example, one student might complain that their internet connection is slow. The cost of CAI software is quite costly.
