Leadership is a process that helps a group to achieve its goals. Leaders and group members can mutually influence each other's ideas.

"The person who exhibits leadership is ... someone that makes things happen that would not happen otherwise." (A.D. Edwards and D. Jones)

For this case study, Mr. Kamal taha, who is working as Process and Quality Engineer at P & R Sheet Metal works, Dandenong is chosen. He joined this industry as Trainee Engineer in 2006, and within three years he is now counted in the middle management and he look himself in upper management in few years. He has proven himself as an effective leader and there is several reasons for his success and his leadership qualities can be analyzed by observing the following traits.

Traits for an effective Leader:

Leaders should be well organized and have made time in their lives for their organization. Leadership requires commitment.

Leadership is a mix of knowledge, values, skills, and behaviors. Each of us has beliefs about what characteristics an effective leader should possess. Different groups will also have different beliefs or values about what "makes" an effective leader than other groups have. Your group will assess your leadership, and your success may depend on how well your leadership characteristics match those that they value.

It is important, then, for a leader to know his/her own abilities, knowledge and values and how others perceive them. For example, if "trust" is a quality which is highly valued by your group, then it is important for you to be viewed as a trustworthy person. By knowing your own strengths and weaknesses, you can also develop a plan to work on those areas you may wish to improve.

A successful leader makes an effort to learn and practice skills. Some of the more essential components are: the knowledge and understanding of specific tasks; the skills and ability to communicate, build teams, vision, and take risks; and, a value for individuals, the group, and its responsibilities.

Following are some factors contribute to Mr. Kamal Taha effectiveness as a leader:

Knowledge and Understanding

General knowledge about the organization, how a meeting is run, and the organization's business are essential. Mr. Kamal Taha understands parliamentary procedure, the role of the chairperson, and the purpose and design of an effective agenda. [2]

In addition, an awareness of the subject that the group is involved with is important.

Skills and Ability Communication

We tend to think of a good communicator as a good speaker. This is only partly true. Good communicators can express themselves clearly and with confidence. However, a key and often forgotten component of effective communication is listening. [3]

Mr. Kamal Taha is a good listener who hears not only facts but also feelings. Paraphrasing or restating the person's message in shorter terms is a useful technique. It helps to clarify the message, and it shows the speaker that you have heard what they have said.

A leader cannot achieve success alone. The old notion that a leader is "the top of the pyramid" is false. An effective leader is involved and in touch with group members. Mr. Kamal Taha enables them to act by providing technical assistance, emotional support and vision.

Mr. Kamal Taha also develops a vision of the organization's future. It is important to communicate this vision to members of the group, allowing them to respond and become part of the visioning process [4]. One should build a vision with others. Visioning is a collaborative effort. A group will grow and prosper by building commitment to a vision or dream that is shared by all. Telling others outside of the organization about the vision is important to the process of developing your own commitment to it.

Risk Taking

Mr. Kamal Taha is a risk taker and an innovator. He recognizes good ideas, actively support them, and encourage action. Mr. Kamal Taha learns from mistakes as well as well from his successes. So he encourages his group members and supports them through their mistakes. Without mistakes, there is no learning or growth.

Value in Others: Recognition and Encouragement

An effective leader must take the time to recognize and reward people for what they've done. Individuals may become tired, bored or frustrated with a particular task or goal. They are often tempted to give up. A leader must provide the encouragement to motivate members to carry on and this is quality clearly shows in Mr.Kamal Taha.

Recognition comes in many forms; it may be given to individuals or to groups. It may be as simple as a word of encouragement: "You did a great job, thanks." Whatever the method, give credit and praise when and where it is due. And do not forget to reward yourself. Celebrate once a goal or milestone has been reached.

Characteristics of Leader Ship:

The first characteristic of Mr.Kamal Taha is understanding and identification with another person's feelings, situation and goals. In the event of a conflict, he is able to empathize with both sides, while being able to negotiate an amicable solution. By this staff will work much better with him when he shows some empathy. [5]

Secondly, he shows a tenacious determination and resolve, never wavering in spite of obstacles. Together with a positive attitude, this can turn around an almost impossible situation, thus enabling others to see the brighter picture and carry on with the task at hand, keeping the end result in mind.

Thirdly, he is able to detach himself from the situation and analyze it from a distance. He is calm and composed in the face of turmoil and uncertainty. This stability like a rock gives a certain sense of character and offers some peace of mind to others who may be mindlessly caught up in that turmoil.

Fourthly, he has excellent communication skills. He is comfortable running meetings and making presentations. His presentation skills are excellent, and he is able to convey accurately the essence of the subject at hand and be able to address any ambiguities before they come up. Such communication skills will have to be learned along the way to being a good leader or manager which Mr. Kamal Taha has in him.

Lastly, he is resourceful enough to find the resources that are needed. Not every leader will have an intimate knowledge of the subject, but he is able to turn to the people in the know and gather any necessary resources as required.

Leadership Qualities and Leadership skills can be developed with leadership training and development. [6]

[9] Therefore, leadership qualities first come from within their selves and they usually need direction and thus they have more capabilities to become a good leader, as they are more experienced and thus they are more capable of handling responsibility as well. Adult learning is also helpful to bring about the positive leadership and attribute as adults are more attractive to learn what because they know that it is important and beneficial for their career development. Thus adult learning becomes an important tool as this provides the sort of education keeping in mind the learner demand. Learners focus is more on content and they use and devote all their passion to bring good results. According to Arthur Chickering, from National Commission on Higher Education and Adult learner, Australia defines the Adult learner as those individuals whose major role in life is something other than the full time students. [10]

Adults are self directed rather than children who are dependent on others, so they are more self motivated. Adults have tendency to learn better, when they know that this process is more valuable to them. As adults differ with each other depending upon their backgrounds, cultures and social backgrounds, that is why their learning capabilities are much different from ordinary individuals. Effective use of time and their learning is also a key characteristic in adult as well. Practical experience of adults also helps them to bring a positive attitude toward learning. Adults can reject knowledge which may appear to them contradictory regarding to their beliefs. Adult learning is more associated with the need rather than interest, which provoke hem to learn material which can significantly increase their potential to become a good leader. This will lead to find out the significance of each and every process and thus can generate data to observe the need of proceeds and areas that can be further focused to bring the result.

Stage 3: Data Categorization

Data obtained from the previous step can be categorized accordance to the areas that are of vital importance and thus they can be helpful to bring leadership qualities and are of extreme importance to increase the potential of the employs. Thus, data categorization can help to identify the needs and goals for the organization.

Stage 4: Prioritize process which shows more room for improvement

Further priority should be awarded to the areas which require more room for improvement. Training session, seminars should be conducted on regular basis to ensure the optimum results which are expected from this model.

Stage 5: Check and Validate

And at the end result should be analyzed. And if results show any sort of discrepancies or lacking, then process should be revised and corrective measures should be taken to bring about the change.

And when the results proved to be good for organization, whole setup should be validated to incorporate for the future use.
