Energy conservation is a topic that is very critical when we talk about the environment. In physics, ‘to conserve” means to result in no net loss of that component. Renewable and non renewable resources are where our source of energy comes from. The problem is that over the years, the consumption of energy has increased drastically. No one wants to even imagine how the world would be if we begin to lose sources of energy. Think about, technology would not even be able to enhance our living standards. This is why energy conservation is a very critical issue and solutions are quickly forming.

Energy itself cannot be created or destroyed but it can be changed from one form to another. However, energy of a system can be interred converted. Those many forms may include mechanical, electrical, magnetic, thermal, chemical, and nuclear. As time goes on, it tends to become less and less available. Becoming energy efficient is one problem consumer's face today.

Humans make up the majority of wasted energy. Some of the biggest electronics contribute to the problem. For example: the television, computer, and the printer. People sit for hours at computer screens. They are doing homework; working from a distance, or they are just browsing. The Department of Energy says 75 percent of electricity is used to power home electronics.

Another problem is carbon dioxide emissions. These emissions come from the burning of fossil fuels for the purpose of electricity in power plants. About 33 percent comes from the burning of gasoline in engines of cars and trucks. This contributes to global warming. ENERGY STAR products cut down on greenhouse emissions.

Currently The U.S. Department of Energy categorizes national energy use in four broad sectors;

1. Transportation

2. Residential

3. Commercial

4. Industrial

Transportation

65% is consumed by gasoline powered vehicles. Diesel consumes 20%.Air traffic consumes 15%. With numbers like these, it is obvious why the automobile industry should be open for change.

Residential

On average about half of the energy used in homes is expended on space conditioning (heating, cooling, etc…). People that hang on to old appliances cost themselves much more money compared to someone that buys a new washer or dryer because they would use less energy. Common home problems include damp basements, mold, dust, or moisture or dry air. There are things that you can do on your own to help save. It is important that you change your air filters. Programmable thermostats are a tremendous saver. All heating and cooling ducts should be properly sealed.

Human requirements for energy are increasing because human population is growing. Acid precipitations, air pollution, CO2 emissions, global climate warming, are related to large quantities of energy production and consumption. The rising energy demand in developing nations is caused by an increase in economic development and increase in population, and the use of older, less expensive, and less energy efficient technologies.

Non living and living things both contribute and is affected by the energy problems. Non living things like cars, factories, gases, and pollutants are things that contribute to the problem. Li8ving things like humans and animals are things that contribute to the problem.

The things we as humans do may put extra stress on the problems than anything else. Humans are guilty for wasting a lot of energy. We do this in our everyday life.

Commercial

Small business is always looking for more ways to conserve energy. ENERGY STAR is recommending because the products can save small business money. [Awkward and vague phrasing—rewrite for greater clarity.] This would affect the heating and cooling options in a business. A business wants to make the best decisions when choosing the products. Routine maintenance checks will be required to continue to save in energy costs. Commercial food industries must become more energy efficient also. Dishwashers, fryers, ovens, and ice machines need to be tested for energy efficiency.

On a positive note if humans were energy conscience than this will start to change the impact. Taking a better look on our living standards and realize that we do not need as much energy wasting products.

Currently sustainability is coming up with new ways to save energy. At one time the country is at a loss for strategies and the solutions were fading away. Programs are being started to put consumer's lack of knowledge behind them and offer opinions on how to help. If we are not informed on energy issues, how are we supposed to know how critical things really are? However, technologies are being introduced and people do not even understand these changes.

My plan to sustainability simply starts with us as individuals. I ask myself these questions:

1. How can I save on energy in my own home? I can use better products.

2. Do I really need all of these electronics?

3. How much energy do I use daily? Is it too much? Is it too little?

I believe change starts with us first before we can change a whole environment. Secondly as I begin to research the problem, I now begin to think on a more global level. By having the knowledge fro the research I can know educate others about what I have researched. Starting programs help educate the public and is the best way to bring the people together. Energy management starts off the thinking process. Making a commitment is the first step. Examining energy by collecting data is the next step. Set the goals. Create a plan. Put plan into action and evaluate the progress. Being able to manage allows a room for improvement. Errors are re evaluated and corrected.

Starting anything new in a community has its benefits and challenges. Some benefits include bringing the community together and developing solutions. Getting the community involved will get a better result in the end. People of the community will be happier about saving their environments. Teamwork will need to be a key focus when organizing a community involved project. With meeting new neighbors, solutions will not limit. The more people there are, more ideas are shared that may lead into an effective solution.

Some challenges include: Getting positive support, getting officials support, and putting the plans into motion. When starting something new there will always be challenges. A community needs a leader. That means someone that will get important tasks done and represent the community as well. This person should oversee all decisions so that the program will get a positive response and attract new prospects.

I believe it is important to have plenty of government, societal, and global support. Without enough support these programs would fall by the waist side. This is how the word gets around. Having government support also helps with funding. The government funds these kinds of programs when it will help fight for energy because energy is a vast necessity. The government will have stay up to date with improving standards to become more energy efficient. Strict energy efficient guidelines are set by the US Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Energy. The government should also consider having benefits available for participants like tax credits and special rebates.

Energy conservation is something that should not just be pushed aside for a future endeavor. It should be the top priority right now. Energy loss is something that we can not afford. We must do whatever it is to make sure we are conserving as much as possible because we all know conservation starts with us. Turn off some of those appliances, TVs, and computers when not in use. Unplug appliances that you do not frequently use. A change in your lifestyle is something that may not affect you as you think. People should get involved and be excited about the future. Research and become apart of programs that are going toward the same purpose. Sustainability is the ultimate goal. Tackling energy conservation is only a piece of the plan. Energy management allows us to have an energy strategy for the future. SAVE! SAVE! SAVE! because your pockets will love you for it.

Request that all residents attend a town meeting. This will give the opportunity to inform people that they are aware if current issues.

Document the audio and visual equipment needed for presentation and layout of the room.

Month 4

Identify and invite community participants.

Tally the number of homes in the community.

Create and distribute flyers to homes announcing.

the next meeting and the educational program that will be introduced.

Plan a kick off event that will inform residents of the community a chance to mingle with each other outside of the everyday hustle or normal hi and byes.

Have fund raisers that will raise money for funding needed for research and plan execution.
